How does donald trump attack compare to previous us presidents? They're different," said Tom Puhlke, a former Obama White House spokesman. "And he has a totally different style than he did before."
The Republican has spent most of the past 48 hours accusing Clinton of using her State Department email to take credit for helping to build up a business empire when she was America's secretary of state, which would violate State Department rules requiring that officials only use official email to conduct government business.
On Tuesday evening, during a campaign rally, Trump repeated his assertion that Clinton had "colluded" in her campaign against him.
"I never helped built her up like she did. We were working together against them from her very first days on the job," he said, drawing some boos. "And if you talk about collusion with Russia, and she's using a server, people are gonna talk about what a liar Hillary Clinton is. I don't give a f*ck about her or her dealings with Russia."
Obama dismissed Trump's attack as fake news and a diversion from the candidate's other attacks against Obama, including a mocking picture of his face in front of a portrait of Trump in the Oval Office.
But Trump's attack on Clinton's server did have a direct impact on foreign policy as well. The Associated Press and other news outlets report that Clinton's emails were accessed on multiple government-owned computers at State, prompting a federal lawsuit filed by the State Department in April alleging violations of the Freedom of Information Act.
In July 2015, the FBI was investigating whether Clinton's use of a private email account while she was secretary of state and as a U.S. senator was in any way a crime. Those probes concluded last summer.
The timing was key in allowing the FBI to review some 55,000 emails, some of them messages on Clinton's email system, as well as some from her former aide, Huma Abedin, in that same probe and conduct additional investigation of the server, according to the AP.
Democrats have seized on the issue and seized on Comey's decision not to recommend charges against Clinton, which came after several public criticism of her handling of classified material during the campaign, but it was Trump who brought it up Tuesday night, telling supporters that Comey's decision had "nothing to do" with the private email server issue, and it was him or Hillary Clinton who had committed the crime by sending classified information on a private server.
In an email to members of his campaign staff in September 2015, Comey wrote about how it felt to see Clinton's name mentioned as one of the nation's top public officials in two stories released last week about Russia's interference in the 2016 campaign.
