Mass whale stranding in tasmanian waters
A man believed to be one of the most powerful stranding survivors has been rescued from the sea off south-west Tasmania by the trawler Tarpon.
Mr Ollie Ollie's plight was revealed by the trawler when it was docked at the Port of Darwin.
The 22-year-old died when his fishing vessel capsized in the Weddell Sea.
"It's a lot of tragedy," Mr Ollie's brother, Chris, said.
"This family has lost a loved one and we're asking for prayers for that family as well as everyone's understanding in regards to this situation.
"We would like all our sympathies to go out to them.
"It's a very tragic situation for them because they've lost the most important of friends that they have in their life."
He added the family would support any new research into whales' ability to survive in waters which are rarely tested.
A spokesperson for Tasmanian Government confirmed a crew had rescued a man and two animals from the Weddell Sea.
He said the man was wearing a life jacket and the two animals were in a boat.
"We have confirmed two missing male and one missing female," he said.
"Crew are assisting the families in assisting with transport and searching the Weddell Sea.
"The two animals are expected to recover within a day."
